Broad Consensus on Raising Taxes on Wealthy
Interesting poll in today’s Financial Times showing a remarkably consistent view around the world that the gap between rich and poor is too wide and that the wealthy should pay more taxes.
For the first time the FT/Harris poll includes Asia and finds that the percentage of respondents in China (80%) who feel the gap is too wide is almost identical to those in the UK (79%) and the US (78%). Opinions ranged from 62% in Japan to 83% in Germany.
Clear majorities in all countries agree that taxes should be raised on the rich and lowered on the poor.
Just over 60% of US respondents feel taxes on the wealthy should be increased, slightly more than in China (60%) and the UK (58%).
However, US respondents were the most resistant to the idea of lowering taxes on the poor.
The survey covered China, France, Germany, Italy Japan, Spain, the UK and the US.
